Storybook

From a very young age, Antonio Rosales showed great love for Mexico. When invaders from another country came to his land, he did not hesitate to defend it. He fought bravely to protect what he loved most.
Antonio firmly believed in freedom and that everyone should be treated equally. That’s why he founded a newspaper called “El Cantarito,” where he shared his ideas for a just and free Mexico.

Over time, Antonio Rosales became a very important figure. He was governor and military commander of Sinaloa, a great responsibility! He always said that he didn’t defend people, but his homeland and his people.
Meanwhile, in a faraway place, the powerful army of France decided to come to Mexico. They wanted to conquer the country and install an emperor. Imagine, the French army was considered the strongest in the world!

The French soldiers disembarked at a port in Sinaloa called Altata. Their objective was to reach Culiacán, the capital, and take it. But Antonio Rosales was not going to allow it.

Antonio Rosales was a very cunning leader. He knew his army was smaller than the French, but he had a brilliant idea. He searched for the perfect place for the battle.
He found a place called San Pedro, a few kilometers from Culiacán. There was a large “nopalera” there, a field full of nopal cacti with many thorns. It would be a natural wall!

On December 22, 1864, the Battle of San Pedro began. The brave Mexican soldiers, led by Antonio Rosales, prepared to defend their land.
The French tried to advance with their cavalry, but surprise! The horses and riders were getting hurt by the thorns of the nopales. Rosales’s strategy was working!
The battle was very intense. The Mexicans fought with great courage. When they ran out of bullets, they used the nopal pads as weapons! Imagine, thorny cacti against the invaders!
After more than three hours of combat, the French could not overcome the bravery and ingenuity of the Mexicans. Antonio Rosales and his men achieved an incredible victory!
To honor his memory, many streets, plazas, and schools bear his name. And most importantly, the city of Culiacán is now called Culiacán Rosales!

They captured many French soldiers and soldiers from other countries who supported them. Although the laws of that time said that prisoners should be shot, Antonio Rosales did something different.
Antonio Rosales was a man with a big heart. He decided not to shoot them. Instead, he treated them with mercy, tending to the wounded and respecting their lives. He was a true hero, even to his enemies!
The victory in San Pedro was so important that it stopped the French advance in that part of Mexico. President Benito Juárez, upon hearing of the feat, promoted Antonio Rosales to Brigadier General.

The people of Mexico celebrated this great victory. The Battle of San Pedro was compared to the famous Battle of Puebla, another great Mexican feat!
Antonio Rosales continued fighting for his homeland. Unfortunately, he died heroically in another battle, in Álamos, Sonora, defending his land until the last moment. He was only 43 years old.
But his legacy was not forgotten. His remains rest in the Rotunda of Illustrious Persons in Mexico City, a special place for the nation’s great heroes.
The story of Antonio Rosales teaches us about courage, ingenuity, and love for our homeland. He is a hero we should always remember and celebrate. Long live Antonio Rosales!
