“SALVUM MEA POPULUM TUUM”. Save me and save Your People are the words engraved at the top main entrance of this cemetery, unique in its kind in the Northwest of the country, with its octagonal shape and a triumphal arc that make you feel as if you are transported back in time when you enter. To the side of the arc are four columns with cornices and a bell tower, all carved out of quarried stone.

Know by Virtual Reality the Spanish Cementery

The cemetery was at the expense of Ignacio Fletes “To the remains of the suffering humanity and the public health of Rosario”. Upon entering this cemetery, you’ll notice there are very few ornamental graves, precisely as it was for the people of the town, those who had little. This doesn’t mean that prominent individuals, both in politics and mining activities, haven’t been buried here.

I’m referring to individuals such as Demetrio Sotomayor, who occupied important positions in our municipality, besides from having been deputy in the legislature of Sinaloa.

Panteón Español

Captain Joaquín Noris, shareholder of the Tajo mines, father of the agilucho of Sinaloa and defender of the Castillo de Chapultepec, the boy hero of Rosario, Teófilo Noris.

One of the stories or legends that not many know about this cemetery is that of the Vampire of Rosario. Yes, read it well, a vampire in Rosario? This happened because of a mistake in the date of a tombstone that read the following, “Here lay the remainings of Mr. Francisco Malcampo, born on August 18th of 1339, deceased on June 28th of 1905”. Imagine while reading the date, this person lived 566 years! Reason why the people started calling him “THE VAMPIRE OF ROSARIO”. Unfortunately, the tombstone was stolen.

Talking of culture, this site has been part of great local shows that little by little have become one of the most appreciated artistic representations during the Day of the Dead.

Panteón Español

I’m referring to the show called “The Return of the Souls” (“El Regreso de las Animas”), under the direction of teacher Karla Murray, General Director of the CAULYAN, Higher Institute of Art and Culture.

It’s precisely about illustrious characters who have brought glory to our municipality and that each Day of the Dead, they come out of their graves to spend time with the living.

The characters include Lola Beltrán, Pedro Infante, Manuelita Arreola, Gilberto Owen, Pablo de Villavicencio, Presbítero Dámaso Sotomayor, Enrique Pérez Arce, María Luisa Lizárraga, among others.

Of course, the characters belonging to popular legends that are still told could not be missing, such as the Death Cart, the Woman in Black, the Water Chan, the Holy Inquisition, and others.
