The Ingenio La Primavera was one of the first industries established in Sinaloa in the late 19th century, owned by the Almada family. It played a significant role in the economic and social development of the Navolato municipality through the production of sugar and alcohol.
In 2013, the company closed after several generations of community members had worked there. Many memories, anecdotes, and feelings of pride revolve around Ingenio La Primavera.
How the Gigapixel of Ingenio La Primavera Was Made
Panoramic photography, like that of Ingenio La Primavera or Parque Las Riberas, is a technique used to create larger, more detailed images. Instead of using wide-angle lenses like 14mm, a series of sequential photographs are taken with short telephoto lenses like 50mm and then overlapped in software.
Sinaloa 360 had the opportunity to take this panoramic photograph of Ingenio La Primavera in December 2014.
Thanks to new digital technological advancements, in 2020, we were able to scale and enhance the quality of the images to create this 2.5-gigapixel photograph.
Camera and Panoramic Head
The panoramic photograph of Ingenio La Primavera was taken with a Nikon D810 camera and a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens.
For greater precision, I used a Nodal Ninja NN4 panoramic head and a Manfrotto 190 tripod.
From various shots, we selected these eight photographs with the following exposure settings: 1/13 sec, f/16, ISO 100
Lightroom
The RAW files were digitally developed in Adobe Lightroom Classic, where we adjusted shadows, highlights, exposure, contrast, white balance, and color.
Topaz Gigapixel AI
A few months ago, the Topaz Gigapixel AI software was released, which, using artificial intelligence technology, allows for enlarging photographs by up to 600% without losing quality.
We scaled the images of Ingenio La Primavera twice with very good results.
PTGui Pro 12-9
The stitching of the photographs was done using PTGui Pro. This program is also used to create 360-degree photographs.
PTGui puede exportar archivos .psb muy grandes como este de mas de 2,500 millones de pixeles.
Photoshop
In Photoshop, we cropped the image, adjusted specific areas of the panorama, and cleaned up spots caused by the camera’s dirty sensor.
Color Efex Pro 4
In Photoshop, we cropped the image, adjusted specific areas of the panorama, and cleaned up spots caused by the camera’s dirty sensor.
Panotour Pro
The final file, ingenio-la-primavera.tif, weighs 2.84 GB. To view it smoothly on a monitor, you need software like Panotour-Pro. This program processes spherical and flat images, generating “tiles,” which means that the enormous image of Ingenio La Primavera is divided into much smaller images for easy viewing, even on mobile phones.
Amazon S3
Finally, we uploaded the file exported from Panotour to the Amazon S3 server using the Cyberduck application
A URL was generated, which is embedded at the beginning of this post under “View Gigapixel.”
