Isla Orabá is a natural oasis in the heart of Culiacán, just a few minutes from the Historic Center and very close to the Miguel Hidalgo Bridge, on the Tamazula River. Surrounded by the waters of this river and very close to its confluence with the Humaya River, the island is a breathing space within the city: a place to walk under tall trees, spend time with family and enjoy one of the most emblematic corners of Las Riberas Park.

Know by Virtual Reality the Island Oraba

A paradise between rivers in the middle of Culiacán

Isla Orabá is located in Culiacán, on the bed of the Tamazula River, right in the area where it joins the Humaya River and the Culiacán River is born. It is part of the recreational corridor of Parque Las Riberas and the Tres Ríos Project, which have turned the riverbanks into one of the most pleasant and visited urban spaces in northwestern Mexico.

With an area of nearly 33,000 square meters, the island offers shaded walkways, benches where you can contemplate the river, and barbecue areas that are perfect for picnics.

Among its wooded areas you can hear the birds and the murmur of the water, inviting you to walk at a relaxed pace, exercise, or simply sit and enjoy the landscape and the cooler microclimate created along the riverbank.

Protected natural area and iguana sanctuary

Since 2004, Orabá Island has been designated a protected natural area and is recognized as a sanctuary for the green iguana, one of Culiacán’s most emblematic species. For this reason, it is important not to feed or disturb them and to keep the area clean and free of litter. Here it is possible to observe these reptiles sunbathing among the trees, sharing the space with birds and other species native to the riverbanks.

The name “Orabá” comes from the Cahita language and is interpreted as “river of the old man” or “old river,” reminding us of the deep Indigenous history linked to this valley and its rivers.

Visiting the island is also a way of connecting with that memory, in which the river has always been a fundamental axis for life in the region.

Why it is worth visiting

Orabá Island is an ideal place for families, athletes, and visitors looking for a quiet corner in the city, whether to ride a bicycle, work out in the open air, or photograph the sunset over the river. From here you can enjoy views of the old malecón (riverfront promenade) and easily connect with the Historic Center, creating an itinerary that combines nature, culture, and urban scenery.

If you are exploring tourism in Sinaloa, make sure to include this spot in your route. It reflects the spirit of Culiacán: close to the river, full of life, and designed to be enjoyed outdoors. Orabá Island is an example of how the city has moved closer to its rivers again, turning them into places of community life and pride for new generations.
