Know by Virtual Reality the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe “La Lomita”: An Icon of Culiacán

History and architecture

The origins of this shrine date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Culiacán began to expand beyond its historic center and a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe stood at the top of the hill. Over time, and as local devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe grew, the temple was transformed until it took on its current form in the mid-20th century, replacing the original structure.

The current parish features a striking modernist design: a structure made up of large triangular planes that evoke hands raised in prayer. From different points around the city, its silhouette stands out on the hill, and many visitors describe it as a peaceful presence watching over Culiacán’s urban landscape. According to various accounts, its design was inspired by a chapel at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado, adapted to the context of Culiacán.

The project for the current building was designed by architect Jorge Molina Montes, and its construction was carried out by the company Casas y Obras.

Inside, five impressive stained-glass windows stand out considered among the largest in Latin America depicting the story of the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego. The light filtering through them fills the church with color and creates an atmosphere of quiet reflection that amazes both visitors and worshippers.

Viewpoint, staircase and Guadalupe tradition

To reach the church, you can climb a wide staircase with more than one hundred steps, beautifully lit at night, or drive up through the streets that surround the hill. From La Lomita’s viewpoint there is a spectacular panoramic view over much of Culiacán, especially beautiful at sunset when the sky turns golden and pink.
