Located in the city center, at the crossroads of Angel Flores and Donato Guerra, the Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (The Sacred Heart of Jesus chapel) was built in 1908. The work was commenced by Priest Jesus Maria Echavarria and designed by Luis F Molina, remaining completely finished, when it became the last bastion of federal detachment commanded by Colonel Luis G. Morelos, during the capture of the city of Culiacan by Maderistas troops.

It is said that Sanctuary have stayed in brick structure was not intentional nevertheless was a revolution, there was gun fire, this was the last stronghold of the Porfiristas force. Colonel Madero barricaded himself there…there are signs of bullets, fingerprints; and the National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH from its initials in Spanish) defend it to remaind bare brick, that finally gives it a special feature.
“The Sanctuary”, as we all know it, prevails it´s importance for the church as one of the oldest buildings in the city, and even though existence of “Cathedral and La Lomita “chapels, people still came here to get married, to baptize, and it remains one of the most sought places to celebrate catholic ceremonies till today.
For the people, The Sanctuary, remains as a reference in the city, and almost every day this beautiful building is visited by sightseeing or architectural students.

Rain as a resource for our images can offer more joy than we think, and we can even say it’s worth the logical risk that the equipment can get wet. Reflections on the street, the colors and contrast that are achieved are main factors that I like.
The photograph of “The Sanctuary” is something special for me because it is precisely in this shrine were many years ago a young couple in love held their marriage forming a beautiful family… my wife and me…
