Picachos Dam is one of the most beautiful dams in Sinaloa and is the newest in Mexico. It is located very close to the port of Mazatlán, just 35 kilometers away. It takes forty minutes to travel the paved road to get there.

History of Picachos Dam

The construction of Picachos Dam began in 2006, when Vicente Fox was president of the republic. The main benefits of this hydraulic project are to ensure water supply in the port of Mazatlán and to support agriculture in the region, where up to 22,500 hectares can be cultivated. The reservoir was finally filled in 2009.

Tourism Services

The families living in this area have benefited from the increase in tourism. They have 40 perfectly equipped boats and have trained some locals as sport fishing guides. They know exactly where to find the bass and ensure that all fish are returned to the water.

Twenty-eight rustic cabins with all amenities were built, and they offer food service with delightful regional dishes.

The communities organized into 6 commercial fishing cooperatives. In 2010, with government support, they planted two million fry, which are tilapia offspring, and with good fishing practices, they have caught 600 tons per season.

How to get to Picachos Dam

There are many ways to get to Picachos Dam, by plane to Mazatlán International Airport, on tourist cruises organized five-hour tours. Via the new highway to Durango, where the Western Sierra Madre was overcome by engineers who built major bridge and tunnel works, tourists from Monterrey, Chihuahua, and the La Laguna area arrive.
